About the Center for Gender Diversity

The Basic Act for Gender Equal Society, enacted in 1999, positioned the creation of a social system free from gender-based bias as “the most important challenge of the 21st century.” In response, Nagoya University quickly adopted the Recommendations for Promoting Gender Equality at Nagoya University in 2002, and has since identified gender equality as a key institutional priority in its Basic Principles of University Management.
In 2003, the university established the Office for Gender Equality and created the Gender Equality Promotion Committee, led by deans and directors, to strengthen organizational efforts. In July 2017, the office was reorganized into the Gender Equality Center, expanding its work in gender research and education and aiming to become a hub for promoting gender equality both domestically and internationally. In April 2022, to further advance gender equality, the center broadened its scope and relaunched as the Center for Gender Diversity.

Message from the Center Director

We are living in a time of significant transformation across society. As science and technology advance and globalization accelerates, gender equality and respect for diversity are increasingly recognized not merely as social issues but as keys to generating new values. The Nagoya University Center for Gender Diversity is committed to contributing to this future-oriented challenge.

Since the establishment of the Office for Gender Equality in 2003, Nagoya University has implemented pioneering initiatives such as expanding on-campus childcare and after- school facilities, and introducing programs to support the development of women researchers. In 2022, the center was reorganized as the Gender & Diversity Center, launching new activities that incorporate diverse and inclusive perspectives. These efforts have been highly regarded both domestically and internationally, positioning the university as a leading model in promoting gender equality.

Nagoya University brings together a wide range of academic fields—humanities, science and engineering, medicine, and social sciences—and through close collaboration among these disciplines, it explores the future of gender studies while implementing concrete initiatives and sharing their outcomes with society. Our aim extends beyond awareness-raising: we seek to develop evidence-based policy proposals and innovative educational programs.

Our goal is to create an environment where everyone, regardless of gender or background, can learn, conduct research, and contribute to society freely. Achieving this requires moving beyond traditional frameworks and fixed ideas to build a new culture that truly embraces diversity. Building on our achievements to date, the center will continue to pursue forward-looking initiatives that pave the way toward a sustainable and inclusive society. We look forward to working together with all of you as we take new steps toward the future.
