Mentoring Program

◆ News ◆

"Faculty Mentoring Program" operated by the Office for Gender Equality and the Center for Studies in Higher Education at Nagoya University receives a Mentoring Award 2012 from the Working Women Empowerment Forum.

What is the Mentoring Program for Female Faculty Members?

Recently appointed faculty members may experience some anxiety regarding their university activities. Nagoya University's mentoring program supports the career development of new faculty members by providing opportunities for interaction with senior faculty members. In this program, new faculty members are called "mentees" and senior faculty members are called "mentors." Widespread introduction of such programs by not only universities but also other organizations testifies to their effectiveness.

At Nagoya University, the Office for Gender Equality and the Center for the Studies of Higher Education collaborate to run a mentoring program for female faculty members. For those hired through the "Employment Acceleration and Career Development Program for Women Researchers: The Nagoya University Model," two mentors are assigned.

Aims of the Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program is expected to deliver the following benefits to mentee faculty members:

・Access to an experienced person with whom they can discuss work and life
 ・Deeper understanding of the university
・Acquisition of the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill duties related to education and research
・Consultations with mentors on how to balance work with life events such as marriage,
  maternity, child-raising, and elderly caregiving
・Opportunities to consider the broad scope of one's career
 ・Development of a cross-sectional network though the mentor's connections

The Mentor Program also has value for mentor faculty members. Through their interactions with newly appointed faculty members, they can discover new ideas and vitality and consider their forward career paths in the light of reviewing their own educational and research achievements.
