Research upskilling and leadership training for female researchers

The Development Package

Initiatives to strengthen the research skills of female researchers

Provision of research funding to female faculty members (professors and associate professors) upon employment or promotion to higher-level positions

To strengthen their research abilities, Nagoya University provides research funding upon the employment or promotion of female faculty members to higher-level positions (professors and associate professors) at the recommendation of the departments involved.

Secretary-sharing system

This system covers expenses for the employment of one secretary (shared secretary) to serve multiple female faculty members within the same department. Shared secretaries handle administrative tasks and other duties that contribute to the research environment, thus alleviating the administrative burden on female researchers and allowing them enough time to pursue their research. This can be expected to improve the work–life balance for researchers and revitalize their research activities. Recipients are selected after a screening process based on their applications.

Leadership program for researchers

This is a program designed to boost the confidence of individual researchers, improve their research efficiency, aid in career formation, and impart leadership skills. It aims to equip researchers with the mental preparation required for promotion to higher-level positions such as professor and associate professor and expedites career support and the formation of participant communities.

IT education for female students

Acting in coordination with NPOs and other organizations that have been working to close the gender gap in technology fields through education and empowerment, Nagoya University provides all female students (including graduate students) with opportunities for IT education regardless of their focus in the humanities or sciences.

Promotional STEM seminars for female students in middle and high school

The university holds continuing and strengthened enrollment seminars that are oriented toward female students in middle and high school and their guardians. Incorporating lectures by female faculty members from departments in the sciences at Nagoya University, these seminars are aimed at encouraging female students in middle and high school to pursue enrollment in university science programs, as well as broadening the base of female researchers.

Top leader commendations for female researchers

From a selection of highly qualified female researchers (in terms not only of the excellence of their research accomplishments and abilities, but also as individuals that can be expected to excel as future university directors or managers) recommended by their respective departments, the university commends several as top leaders and provides them with research subsidy funding. It is anticipated this initiative will foster the cultivation of top female leaders and raise awareness university-wide.

Subsidy funding for English proofreading services

To help female researchers communicate their research findings in English, this initiative provides subsidy funding to cover the cost of proofreading English manuscripts intended for publication in academic journals or books.
